If you're a parent who doesn't have the desire to change your learned behavior, then this book will just agitate you. However, if you're a parent who knows that the way you were raised was not gentle, and you need a little (or a lot of) help, then this book can and will (hopefully) help you! I was a sensitive child who was not raised in a gentle manner at all. I was yelled at, always told I was in the way, called "a nuisance." and made to feel bad about myself. Although I don't know if my family intended to damage me (but, I don't think so), I do know that I was afraid to become a parent. I tried therapy. I wanted my life to go a certain way so that, when I became a parent, I could guarantee I would be a good one. The journey didn't go the way I had planned, though, and, a little later in life, I started having kids soon after I got married. I was scared but good at it, at first - never ran out of patience. Then, by my third (and last) child, my issues started to reveal themselves. The yelling started, and I didn't know how to stop. After many restless nights and one particular night of prayer, I was led to LR Knost's web page, where I found her book. Instantly, I purchased it and started reading it, as soon as I got it! I'm not even done, yet, but I'm telling you, if you have the desire to change your parenting skills, this book will convict you to do so, and that's what I needed. I've cried; I've been uncomfortable, but, after reading, I find a new way to parent the way I've always wanted - gently - but didn't have the tools to do so. So, thank you LR Knost for caring enough about kids (and parents, people in general) to write a book that digs in its heels yet gently encourages a new way of thinking and raising these little people. his is the kindle version of another book I ordered a couple weeks ago, #TheGentleParent Positive, Practical, Effective Discipline by #LRKnost .
The paperback was the first of my order to come in & the kindle version was only a dollar extra. I quickly got to chapter 10 in the hard copy and have now reached chapter 12 in the version.
The logic behind this way of parenting is valid & compassionate even if it can seem foreign to the ways many of us were raised & how we see others parenting today. The encouragement for connection & cooperation is such a simple but necessary guiding tool.
As well as breaking down the mindset behind the techniques Knost also encourages parents as they go without shaming them harshly for their failings. The advice given is solid yet flexible for situational application & is relayed in a kind, respectful manner.
I look forward to completing the book, even though I have a few years till the chapters on teenagers is applicable ;)
I have been reading quotes from L.R.Knost for months, and I finally read my first book by her. My biggest desire as a mom (and perhaps the source of my biggest feelings of failure) is to be more gentle. As a highly sensitive mom who stays home with and homeschools two highly sensitive kids (one more strong willed than the other), everything in my personality and theirs points to gentle parenting as the best option for our family. However, our intense emotions make us less than gentle with each other. The author probably addressed every concern I have; she even touched on how children reflect our emotions and how we take out our unmet needs on our children. I could not stop reading this book until I was done, and I look forward to implementing her methods starting tomorrow. )
Wow, very different approach to parenting than how I was raised. Skeptical at first but the way it's explained makes so much sense. A quick read and definitely a must read. Even if you don't agree with everything in this book they have some valid points (p.s. the toddler conversation part is hilarious! )
I have learned so much about how to parent with out punishment (spankings, etc..). ALL of L.R. Knost books are very wonderful & I have purchased them (the versions) I actually am working on buying the entire set in paperback so that I can loan them out to other parents..
the Three C's of gentle discipline--Connection, Communication, and Cooperation are such great discipline tools.
It really does make a big difference in your Child(ren)'s mental/ emotional well being & their level of willingness to be obedient.
Wonderful book about how to parent in a peaceful kind gentle way. It made me really consider if I treat my children is how I wanted to be treated. Do I speak how I want to be spoken to. Love is truly the fulfillment of everything a parent needs to be, do and say. If I want my children to be kind in midst of unkindness do I provide them an example. If I want them to be helpful and gentle am I that way with them. Thank you so much for your time and efforts in writing this book. I am a changed parent for the better
I like her books a lot. The main issues for me are 1) she tends to quote 1 of her books *extensively* in another one. So you're not paying for as much new material as you would like.
2) I think the teaching (here and/ or other books) about sin and grace is a little foggy. I would not use these books as a basis for theology about our sinful natures and about salvation. HOWEVER, it's important to note that the theology of many in the pro-spanking camp, especially the Pearls, is not only off--it's horrifying. At least Knost's advice is not leading to children's deaths.
Love the ideas -- truly written by a loving parent who desires her children to understand good choices from the present options and truly trains the child how to make good choices independently. Repercussions are on par with personal responsibility and provide teachable moments too. I love that her guidance allows for the preferences of each child to be calibrated in to solutions. The child is part of the process and that autonomy allows for the balance between loving guidance and respect for authority. I think this is a wonderful book for parents and anyone who interacts with children.
